West-Facing Living Room Curtains: Plan for Afternoon Light

A west-facing living room can feel gentle in the morning and much brighter later in the day. Before choosing curtains, look at the room when you actually use it. The aim is a comfortable place to sit, read and relax, with coverage you can adjust as the light changes.

Observe the difficult hour first

Spend a few minutes in your usual seat during the brightest afternoon period. Note where direct light falls, whether it reflects on the television, and whether you need to shade the whole window or only one section. Repeat this on another day if possible. A photograph taken in morning light will not explain the afternoon conditions.

Try a small change to the screen angle or seating position as part of the test. Curtains should work with your everyday layout, rather than requiring you to rearrange the room every afternoon.

Choose adjustable layers

A sheer can soften daylight while keeping an airy appearance. It may not be enough for strong direct sun or screen reflections. A separate heavier curtain gives another level of coverage when the sheer alone is uncomfortable. Separate tracks or rods let you operate the two fabrics independently.

For a textured sheer, explore the 6101 wool-blend sheer. For stronger light control, compare the 6109 chenille curtain, listed at approximately 95% light blocking. Neither a fabric photograph nor its color alone establishes the result at your window.

Check coverage and open-panel space

Look at the top, sides and center of the proposed treatment. Light can pass around a curtain even when its fabric blocks most transmitted light. Make sure closed panels cover the intended area and open panels have room to gather. Check nearby doors, furniture and window handles before settling the hardware position.

Measure the usable track or rod width and the height from the actual hanging point, following the measurement guide. Do not add a fabric-fullness multiplier to the installation width entered in the product form.

Repeat the privacy check after sunset

A sheer that feels private in bright daylight may reveal the room when indoor lights are on. Test the actual fabric from realistic viewing positions, and use a suitable opaque layer where evening privacy is needed. The Luma layered set combines the 6101 sheer with the 6109 outer curtain for independently adjustable coverage when used with suitable hardware.

Before you order

  • Record the time and position of troublesome light.
  • Compare fabric samples in afternoon and evening conditions.
  • Confirm hardware, panel opening and gathering space.
  • Enter your measurements and review the final configured price.

Do not assume curtains have a particular heat-reduction, UV-protection or energy-saving rating unless that performance is specified for the exact product. Choose the fabric around the light and privacy conditions you can observe.
