More than a curtain size calculator

A basic curtain calculator may multiply track width by a fullness ratio. A professional workroom, however, needs more specific answers:

  • How many pleats or wave buttons are required?
  • How much fabric is used between pleats or buttons?
  • What is the flat cut width of each panel?
  • How many cuts are required from the fabric roll?
  • Can pieces from different windows share the same fabric breadth?
  • How much should actually be purchased after rounding?

The key feature: cross-window fabric optimization

The calculator first creates an independent cutting plan for every window. It then identifies compatible windows using the same fabric name or code and the same fixed fabric width.

Instead of treating each window as a separate purchase, the optimization engine combines their cut pieces and looks for opportunities to place a narrower piece into the unused width beside another piece. A shorter cut may also share a row with a longer cut when the fabric width allows it.

In practical terms, the calculator tries to turn the remaining width from one window into usable space for another window.

This is especially valuable when a project contains several windows using the same fabric but with different finished heights, panel widths, or curtain styles. The more compatible cuts available for comparison, the greater the opportunity to find a more efficient layout.

Independent plan versus optimized plan

Fabric optimization should be auditable. For that reason, Xpro Curtain Calculator does not hide the original calculation or display an unexplained “savings” claim.

The order summary compares:

  • Independent theoretical use: the total fabric length when each window is planned separately.
  • Independent purchase amount: the suggested quantity when windows are purchased independently.
  • Optimized theoretical use: the total length after compatible cuts are packed across windows.
  • Optimized purchase amount: the suggested purchase quantity after optimization.
  • Cut length saved: the difference between the independent and optimized cutting plans.
  • Metres saved: the fabric reduction produced by the optimized plan.

The system compares the combined plan with the independent baseline and does not select a combined plan that uses more fabric. If the independent arrangement is already the most efficient, the savings may correctly be zero.

When is fabric optimization available?

Cross-window optimization is intended for compatible fixed-width fabrics. To group windows correctly, the following information must match:

  • Fabric name or code
  • Fabric width
  • Fixed-width cutting direction

Entering a consistent fabric code is important. For example, every window using the same fabric might be labeled LINEN-6111. Windows with a different code or a different width remain in separate material groups, preventing incompatible fabrics from being combined.

Optimization may be marked as not applicable when the project uses only fixed-height fabric. It may also be unavailable when fabric information is missing, when the cuts cannot fit within the entered width, or when there is no compatible cross-window combination.

Whole-home custom curtains

Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and studies often use the same fabric in different window sizes. Combining these cuts can make better use of the roll width than purchasing each room independently.

  • Button-spacing fabric requirement
  • Flat cut width per panel
  • Total cut width
  • Theoretical fabric use and suggested purchase amount

How to use Xpro Curtain Calculator

1. Choose the language and unit

Select English or Simplified Chinese, then work in centimetres or inches. Physical dimensions are preserved when switching units, but one consistent unit should be used throughout the project.

2. Create the project

Enter the customer name, project or order name, and any notes needed by the designer or workroom.

3. Add every relevant window

Fabric optimization works at order level, so add all project windows that may use the same fabric. Give each window a clear room name for production reference.

4. Enter the fabric name or code

Use exactly the same code for every window using the same fabric. This is how the calculator identifies compatible material groups.

5. Select the curtain and fabric types

Choose fixed pleat spacing or wave curtain, single panel or pair, and fixed-height or fixed-width fabric. For optimization, enter the accurate fixed fabric width.

6. Enter production measurements

Add the track or pole width, finished height, pleat or runner spacing, and the fabric take-up or button spacing required by the selected system.

7. Review the production details

Check the calculated pleats, buttons, panel cut widths, total cuts, allowances, theoretical use, and suggested purchase amount for each window.

8. Compare the order totals

Review the independent and optimized totals by fabric code. The displayed metres saved show the calculated difference between the two plans.

9. Save, print, or download the PDF

Optimization does not remove necessary allowances

Reducing waste does not mean reducing the fabric required to make the curtain correctly. The current calculation rules retain the relevant production allowances, including:

  • A 10% finished-width allowance for natural curtain rebound
  • Edge allowances for each panel
  • Pleat or button requirements
  • Height allowances based on fabric direction and curtain type
  • Suggested purchase quantities rounded up to the next 0.1 metre

The optimization feature reduces avoidable layout waste while preserving the dimensions needed for fabrication.

Important production limitations

The current version does not include pattern-repeat matching, fabric defects, shrinkage, dye-lot differences, pricing, inventory, or installation hardware beyond pleats and buttons.

Patterned fabrics requiring horizontal or vertical matching need an additional allowance. Final measurements, fabric direction, hardware specifications, and the cutting plan should always be reviewed by an experienced designer or curtain workroom before fabric is cut.
