Two custom curtain quotes can show different totals while describing different products. One may include lining and hardware, another may cover the fabric panels alone. Comparing the price before comparing the specification can hide the reason for the difference.
Start with one written brief and ask each supplier to identify what is included. The aim is to understand the offer clearly, not to assume that the highest or lowest total is automatically the better choice.
Use the same window and panel information
Give each supplier the same labeled window measurements, photos and intended opening arrangement. Keep hardware span, finished curtain drop and available gathering space distinct. If measurements are provisional, say so and ask what must be confirmed before production.
Check whether quoted widths refer to each panel, a pair, the finished heading width or the fabric before it is formed. Confirm the number of physical panels. A quote for one panel cannot be compared directly with a quote for a pair without resolving those definitions.
Match the fabric and lining specification
Record the fabric reference, color and any relevant composition or care information supplied by the seller. Similar color names or linen-like appearances do not establish that two materials are equivalent. Compare real samples where available.
List the lining separately, including its stated function and any additional layer. An unlined curtain and one with a specified blackout lining are different constructions. If you require a particular level of coverage, explain the need and ask how the proposed fabric and installation address it. See our lining guide for the basic options.
Confirm the heading and construction
Name the desired heading and ask how fullness is specified for it. Do not compare fullness numbers without understanding whether the suppliers are using the same measurement basis. The formed heading, finished width and amount of flat fabric are related but different.
For patterned fabrics, ask about repeat matching, joins and alignment between panels. Discuss any special construction you need and request that it appears in the written specification. Our pattern selection guide explains why a small swatch may not reveal every production consideration.
Separate curtains from hardware and installation
Ask whether rods or tracks, brackets, rings or carriers, end components and any operating accessories are included. Confirm that the proposed system supports the span, weight and movement of the quoted curtains.
Also clarify who measures, who installs and what each service covers. A supply-only quote and an installed package have different scopes. Where installation is separate, confirm which dimensions or decisions the installer needs to approve before the curtains are made.
Read the total and the conditions together
Request a clear breakdown of the product, optional items and any stated delivery, tax or service charges. Identify what is fixed and what remains an estimate. Compare totals on the same basis and ask about anything missing instead of assuming it is included.
Review the supplier's current lead-time estimate, payment stages, change process and custom-order terms before committing. Do not infer these from another supplier's policy or an old quotation. Keep the dated quote and the final approved specification together.
Use a simple comparison sheet
- Dimensions: hardware span, finished drop, width definition and panel count.
- Materials: fabric reference, color, lining and care information.
- Construction: heading, fullness basis, joins and pattern matching.
- Scope: hardware, measuring, installation and delivery.
- Conditions: total charges, estimated timing and current order terms.
If one quote differs, label the difference rather than forcing the totals into a like-for-like comparison. You may decide that an included service or different material is worthwhile, but that should be a visible choice.
